Partying towards the precipice
With music by George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Kurt Weill.
The Roaring Twenties. A musical and cultural heyday between two world wars. Glitter and glamour beneath the looming shadow of the catastrophe that is still fresh in the collective memory. A proverbial dance on the edge of the volcano, some 100 years ago, that looks alarmingly like today.
The Berlage Saxophone Quartet and singers Karin Strobos and Martijn Cornet will be presenting an evening’s entertainment with a selection of songs from those turbulent interbellum years: the age of jazz, big bands, and of course the growing dominance of the saxophone. George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Kurt Weill will all be present in arrangements by Wijnand van Klaveren. He has forged the Saxophone Quartet into a combination of big band, orchestra and ‘bar piano’. They will be conjuring up every conceivable sound that their saxes can produce. Choreographer/director Pim Veulings and stage designer Paul Boereboom have set the programme in an undefined period.
Every age has its crises, and our reactions to them all look frighteningly familiar: stick you head in the sand and party towards the precipice.
A festive event with a haunting edge about approaching catastrophe, and how we deal with it.
People, time to party!
