Peter Vigh

Peter Vigh (1987) is a classical saxophonist and composer, and the alto saxophonist of the Berlage Saxophone Quartet, for which he also composes and arranges. His work moves between contemporary music and music theatre and is performed by leading ensembles and soloists.

As a creator, he operates at the intersection of composing and performing, often working in close collaboration with the musicians for whom he writes.

His music is characterized by organically evolving structures and a balance between stillness and energy, with space for playfulness, dance, and humor. His Hungarian roots are subtly present, shaped into a personal and contemporary idiom in which imagination, human relationships, and vulnerability play a central role.

Vigh frequently works within a music theatre context and has created productions in collaboration with companies such as Via Berlin and LeineRoebana. Recent projects include the family performance De Familie Sax (Concertgebouw Amsterdam) and SCHOK! (November Music), in collaboration with Capella Brabant.

As a composer, he has worked with ensembles and musicians including Dudok Quartet Amsterdam, Capella Amsterdam, Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, and the Cello Octet Amsterdam, as well as soloists such as Arno Bornkamp, Nino Gvetadze, and Noa Wildschut. His work has been commissioned and performed by, among others, Cello Biënnale Amsterdam, AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert, and NPO Klassiek, and is published by Universal Edition Wien.

His compositions have received wide recognition: Totaliter Aliter was praised as “of otherworldly beauty,” and his oratorio Seven Years and Three Weeks was nominated for the VSCD Award De Ovatie (2021/22).

Vigh studied composition with Klaas de Vries, Fabio Nieder, and Willem Jeths, and saxophone with Arno Bornkamp and Jean-Denis Michat. He completed his Master’s degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with distinction (cum laude).
