Berlage Saxophone Quartet

The Berlage Saxophone Quartet was founded in 2008 in the class of Arno Bornkamp at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. The quartet creates performances, concerts, and video clips in which the saxophone quartet serves as the foundation for a powerful storyteller of classical music.

The Berlage Saxophone Quartet believes in the significance of music, from the Renaissance to the present day, as a means of telling important and universal stories.

Berlage uses a variety of forms and combines musical depth with an engaging presentation, enhanced by other disciplines. The quartet has previously collaborated with writer Jan Brokken, theatre company Via Berlin, lighting artist Jurjen Alkema, and film director Sander Burger.

In addition to regular concerts and theatre tours, the Berlage Saxophone Quartet has released three albums on the renowned German label MDG. The CDs SaxoFOLK, In Search of Freedom, and Goldberg Variations received international acclaim from both audiences and critics.

In recent years, the quartet has won several awards, including a scholarship at the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb (2011), the Dutch Classical Talent Award (2013), and the Kersjes Prize (2015). In 2022, they were nominated for the VSCD “Ovatie” for Just (De Rechtvaardigen) with Cappella Amsterdam and Jan Brokken.

The quartet consists of Lars Niederstrasser, Peter Vigh, Juani Palop, and Eva van Grinsven. Peter Vigh also serves as the ensemble’s in-house arranger and composer, whose talents the quartet frequently draws upon.

The Berlage Saxophone Quartet receives structural funding from the Performing Arts Fund NL, the Province of North Brabant, and the Municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
