Comedian and writer Vincent Bijlo is the great-grandson of H.P. Berlage. Bijlo inherited Berlage’s belief that art should have something to say about the world we live in. The Berlage Saxophone Quartet shares this belief. Together, they join forces for a new production reflecting on the ideals of both past and present.

In the three-part podcast series Berlage’s Ideals, Vincent Bijlo talks with the musicians of the Berlage Saxophone Quartet about the ideas behind the performance.
For this episode, Vincent meets tenor saxophonist Eva van Grinsven at Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Together, they explore Berlage’s ideals, the fascinating relationship between music and architecture, and what his ideas can still teach us today.
And Berlage comes even closer: we hear his own voice, as well as that of Vincent’s grandmother Miep, H.P. Berlage’s youngest daughter.

About Berlage’s Vision and the Collaboration
What happens when music and architecture come together? In Berlage’s Vision, Vincent Bijlo and the Berlage Saxophone Quartet pay tribute to architect H.P. Berlage and his ideals. The idea for the collaboration arose when the musicians heard Bijlo speaking on NPO Klassiek about Berlage’s never-built Pantheon of Humanity.
In the performance, they take you on a journey through the story of this imagined temple in the heart of Europe, conceived as a symbol of unity and connection. Through music, spoken word and visuals, Berlage’s vision comes to life, revealing just how relevant his ideas remain today.
